Your Key to the DoD is designed to educate Genentech pharmaceutical sales representatives on the protocols required to effectively engage VA hospitals.
The course leverages the following:
- Scenario-based learning where the leaner applies rules of etiquette for interacting with VA staff
- Avatars to enhance identification, motivation and engagement
- 7 lesson structure
- Humorous visual metaphors to simplify complex subject matter

Performance Gap
Genentech stakeholders had noticed that their pharmaceutical sales representatives were having challenges when visiting VA hospitals to place their products on hospital formularies. One of the challenges was that sales representatives were not versed in VA hospital protocol, which therefore prevented them from successfully placing their products.
Solution
After meeting with the project stakeholder, we determined that a scenario-based interactive solution would help representatives to navigate VA hospital protocol. Using the narrative technique of first person identification (the avatar being a representative), the learner ushered the avatar through the process of engaging the VA as well as developing a knowledge of VA structure and etiquette.
Design Highlights
- Employed CCAF structure of instructional design
- Wrote and designed a story-based structure to show the challenges and successes of working with the VA
- Used mini-challenges to teach complex skills such as identifying rank and healthcare plan applicability
- Worked with an instructional animator bring the project to life
