Project Summary: Fall Protection Training, Part 1

Scenario-based online training that teaches Fall Protection program rules and protocols. The training is designed following the CCAF (Context, Challenge, Activity, Feedback) model to situate the learning experience within a context that is familiar to LBNL workers.

Roles

  • Instructional designer
  • Photographer
  • Videographer
  • Storyline developer

Performance Gap

Fall Protection was a two-part training consisting of a synchronous online Zoom presentation (part 1) and a follow-up in-person harness fitting (part 2). Specific challenges were that Part 1 required two hours of the instructor’s time as well as the inconvenience of learners having to take the training when it interfered with their work schedule. The Zoom-based training was largely lecture-based with some question and answer activities throughout.

Solution

To design an online, asynchronous training to replace part 1.

  • Scenarios are derived from a facilities staff survey enquiring about most likely scenarios where fall protection is applied
  • Reduced training time from 2 hours to 40 minutes for trainees
  • Released Fall Protection trainers from monthly training requirements

Design Highlights

  • Interactive, scenario-based training following the CCAF model
  • Shot on-location video and photos to build scenarios
  • Job aids are provided for harness fit. See Site-Specific Job Aids
  • Engaged Fall Protection program owner and SME to demonstrate practices and to act in the training
  • Designed interactive micro-challenges to build proficiency in applying Fall Protection program protocols and best practices
